Exeter Cathedral School – New Performance Facility
The proposal for the new performance facility for Exeter Cathedral School is an exciting proposal in terms of its contribution to and interaction with the public realm.
The four storey building comprises a double height 200 seat auditorium for public and school performances incorporating retractable seating, acoustic screening and AV room. Digital signals from the performance, will be fed to an external two storey LED media array which forms the principle facade to the building. The latter will comprise a matrix of LED bulbs that will react to the performance inside the building and display this in a variety of controllable sequences to the public. The LED matrix is veiled by a ceramic print glass facade which will produce a milky ‘limestone’ opacity during the day. Additional accommodation includes music practice rooms and two retail units to create an active frontage at street level.
The proposal abuts listed buildings and a scheduled ancient monument together with Roman remains beneath making this a challenging, complex and high profile project.
