KTA were appointed as Architect and Lead Designer to expand the existing Endoscopy department within Derriford Hospital. The scheme creates new pre-admission spaces, 3 new Endoscopy treatment rooms, post-surgery recovery bays and a new discharge lounge. Further staff space including admin areas and a new staff rest accompanied the scheme. The design allows for better separation of sexes creating a more Jag compliant scheme within the recovery stages. Improved patient flow is at the heart of the scheme with a new entrance flowing into pre-admission rooms, treatment, recovery and discharge bays. KTA’s roles included preparing and submitting the planning application and liaising with the local planners for the roof extension. The project involved working above existing live theatre suites which could suffer no down-time in working.
Working closely with the University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust KTA provided full RIBA Stage services from initial design to delivery. The new Endoscopy Unit at Derriford Hospital is part of a strategic investment to expand diagnostic capacity, improve patient experience, and reduce waiting times.
The upgraded Endoscopy Unit at Derriford is a high-capacity, high-quality hub—backed by modern equipment, a skilled workforce, and patient-first values. It supports urgent diagnostics, cancer screening, therapeutic procedures, training, and research.
