The Tropicana is an iconic building on Weston-super-Mare’s seafront. This unique entertainment venue has played host to notable events and celebrities since it opened in 1937.
KTA were appointed by Morgan Sindall to take from RIBA 3-5, redesigning the existing scheme and take it through planning to completion. Planning approval was achieved in Spring 2025.
Key features of the redevelopment include;
-
Expanded Capacity: The venue will accommodate up to 5,000 attendees, featuring a new indoor space designed for approximately 1,000 people.
-
Architectural Enhancements: The existing 1980s internal structure will be replaced with a modern, double-height steel-framed building. This design aims to optimize acoustics and spatial efficiency, with external walls illuminated by decorative lighting to enhance visual appeal.
-
Sustainability Initiatives: The project includes the installation of renewable energy sources, such as heat pumps and solar panels, to improve energy efficiency and address environmental concerns.
-
Heritage Preservation: Restoration efforts will focus on the original 1930s promenade building, maintaining its historical significance while integrating modern facilities
This redevelopment is part of North Somerset Council’s broader vision to rejuvenate the town’s seafront and cultural landscape.
